The last thing this government wants is a democratic Lords
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom prime minister, Tony Blair, has acted skilfully in his drive to reform the House of Lords. The leader of the Conservative Party, William Hague, has set up a commission led by Lord Mackay which has produced proposals for a democratic upper house, but instead, the opposition supports a Royal Commission which is unlikely to produce proposals as democratic as those of Mackay. The hereditary peers have a chance to remain through being elected by other peers. Many life peers do not want to stop being called Lords, since this is seen as a privilege.

Blair turns away from the shadows
Article Abstract:
The Cabinet reshuffle undertaken by UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is a clear reflection of his desire to assert his authority over Chancellor Gordon Brown. However, he has taken Brown's views into account to a certain extent by avoiding giving Peter Mandelson a position at the centre of power. The reshuffle will certainly give Blair tighter control over government, and clearly shows his modernizing, meritocratic views. It also shows that he can be ruthless, even in respect of those who have strongly supported him.
