The former South China Morning Post Editor considers developments at the newspaper since Hong Kong's return to China on Jul 1, 1997. Predictions that the newspaper would merely bow to China's will are recalled, and the fact that the newspaper has maintained its independence is emphasized. Conflict with the authorities is discussed, and the prospects for the newspaper under a new Editor are considered.

In doing so, he has failed to take into account the impact of his approach on relations with countries such as Germany and Spain. It now seems that France's partners are becoming unsettled by this new attitude, fearing that Chirac may use his new power unwisely.
