Article Abstract:

Homeless people with mental health problems do not get appropriate care in the community as services they require are divided between central and local government. In London 40% of the destitute have a history of psychiatric illness, often deteriorating further when homeless and ending up in prison; cutbacks in health services, housing and benefit exacerbate the problem. The community care reforms have done nothing to mesh together the health services run by the government and social services run by local authorities and the homeless are let down as they move between one service and the other.

Article Abstract:

Peter Thompson head a mental health charity called Matthew Trust, which aims to help people with psychiatric problems. Thompson was a well-respected figure who suffered a breakdown after losing his partner and fearing he was to lose his job. He gave a lift to three hitchhikers and believed they were attacking him, so injured them with a knife. He was diagnosed with manic depression. He was put in Broadmoor, a psychiatric prison, and wrote of his experiences after leaving Broadmoor.

The BBC World Service has been playing a vital role during the conflict in Albania. It has been the only source of unbiased information for many ordinary Albanians, and its journalists have faced great personal danger in order to ensure that the truth about the situation in the country is made known internationally. The content of the programming has changed continuously in response to latest events, and there is now a strong domestic content to the news coverage.
