The new face of politics
Article Abstract:
The mid-term elections held in the US in Nov 1998 offered a valuable insight into a number of recent political trends. It is clear that opinion polls give an inaccurate view of voters' intentions, with many voters not telling the truth about how they intend to vote or merely not revealing their intentions at all. The outcome of these elections also shows that the definition of character is changing, with voters making a clear distinction between President Bill Clinton's private life and his ability to lead the country. Furthermore, the most successful politicians in today's political climate are those who place more emphasis on competence than on ideology.

The French prosecutor, called for the extradition of an Algerian, Abdelkarim Denech, from Switzerland, but appears to have requested the wrong person.

'Megan's law' murder puts public on trial
Article Abstract:
There are now 41 states in the US which have passed 'Megan's laws,' under which courts must inform local people if a convicted sex offender is released or paroled into the area. However, there is now growing controversy about such legislation, and legal challenges are pending in eight states where 'Megan's laws' have not yet been passed. Opponents of informing local people believe that doing so places the sex offender in an almost impossible situation. In some cases, sex offenders have been forced to leave the community because of extreme pressure from local people.
