The oddest season in 1,000 years
Article Abstract:
Ski operators are facing significant challenges as the 1999/2000 season approaches. They have been forced to extend trips during the New Year period to around nine or 10 days because of Christmas Day and New Year's Day both falling on a Saturday, the usual transfer day, and because of concerns about air traffic problems connected with the year 2000 computer date change. This has pushed up holiday prices. Furthermore, Easter is very late in 2000, and this means that bookings are down.

The Scots ski into luxury
Article Abstract:
Skiing in Scotland has always had a rather negative image, with many skiers preferring the milder weather conditions and better facilities of the Alps. However, facilities for skiers have now improved greatly in Scotland, with the Nevis Range ski area, for example, offering a large restaurant and bar and 10 ski lifts. The resort offers high quality, challenging skiing, but has been badly affected in the 1996-1997 by poor snowfall.

Reindeer country
Article Abstract:
Lapland, the most northerly province of Finland, has a very low population density, and seems almost deserted. This is true even at Christmas, when the area attracts a considerable number of visitors. Cross-country skiing is one of the most popular activities in Lapland, where there is snow on the ground between Nov and May. This form of skiing is very different from downhill skiing, and is very easy to learn.
