The last chance saloons
Article Abstract:
Pupil Referral Units are a key element in the UK government's education strategy, especially as the number of children permanently excluded from mainstream education continues to rise. At present, there are 318 such units run by 94 local education authorities, and this number is set to increase with a new Education Bill which will oblige all local education authorities to draw up a plan for dealing with disruptive and excluded pupils. Existing facilities are stretched to the limit, and some are having to turn pupils away.

The family curse
Article Abstract:
Tuberous sclerosis (TS), a genetic disorder which affects one in 7,000 newborn children, is often undiagnosed because many health professionals know little about it. Early diagnosis is vital, as severe mental handicap can develop if the seizures which characterise TS in infancy are not treated correctly. Symptoms include behavioural problems, a facial rash, epilepsy and benign tumours in organs such as the lungs, heart and liver.

People who panic at the thought of other people
Article Abstract:
People who are social phobics find it very hard to attend social events, and sometimes experience panic attacks. In extreme cases, they experience problems in simply being with their own family. They are unable to form intimate relationships, feel unable to deal with everyday tasks, such as shopping, and have a number of physical symptoms. They can find help through self-help group Triumph over Phobia.
