'The plane is going to Turkey,' said the official. 'But don't tell the refugees. They might refuse to get on.'
Article Abstract:
Macedonia is determined to rid itself as soon as possible of the ethnic Albanians who have flooded across its border with Kosovo, Yugoslavia. Many of the refugees have already been flown out of Macedonia, mainly to Turkey. The refugees were not told where they were being taken, and they have no idea whether they will ever be able to return to their homes. There has been considerable international concern about the way in which the refugees are being treated by the Macedonian authorities.

The UK has begun retaliating against France for the latter's continued ban on beef from the UK. Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced that legal action will be taken if France continues to ban beef from the UK, while Minister for Agriculture Nick Brown has stated that he will not eat any French foods. Several UK supermarkets have introduced full or partial bans on French produce, and a number of restaurateurs have removed French produce from their menus.
