The power and the glory
Article Abstract:
Music competitions and the associated nerve wracking are facts of life for the young musician who wants to pursue a busy career but the cut-throat rivalry and its effect on young performers is now being taken into account by the organisers. The really major events like the Moscow and Leeds piano competitions are still winner-take-all but those associated with caring organisations like the BBC's Young Musician of the Year and the Flick and the Audi Junior Musician competitions are adopting a care and share policy. Not just the winners are feted, masterclasses and festivals being arranged for the other candidates.

A 20th-century folk hero
Article Abstract:
The death in Dec 1976 of composer Benjamin Britten has always been viewed with particular sadness because he died at a relatively young age and many observers regret the years of potential output which were lost. There have been many re-recordings of his works, and some previously unheard works have been discovered, but this is not the same as completely new material. He was regarded as an outstanding songwriter, being able to take possession of the words through music.

Confucius, he play ...
Article Abstract:
Chinese music is becoming more international. The London Chinese Orchestra performs standard operatic works. Chinese music has had horizontal intentions since the 16th century. It uses expressive melody with musicians creating their own variants of the melody. Re-interpretation of existing melodic material is the main activity. Knowledge of tunes and study of bamboo flutes are important. Different regions of China have their own styles.
