The proper way to sell off the family silver
Article Abstract:
The UK government is to permit departments to sell off assets listed on the National Assets Register in order to raise money for capital spending. Some observers have expressed concern about this policy, particularly as the stock of government assets is now at very low levels. Selling more assets to the private sector would have a damaging impact on the public sector's balance sheets. However, the government is keen to emphasize that the proceeds of selling assets would only be used to finance capital expenditure, thus boosting public sector investment.

Home fires still a long way from flaring up
Article Abstract:
Many observers were predicting at the beginning of 1994 that there would be a recovery in the housing market, but this did not happen. Some believe that this was because of the withdrawal of attractive fixed-rate mortgages from spring 1994, but a more significant factor is personal disposable income. House prices tend to expand more or less in line with personal incomes, and in 1994 housing market problems were mainly the result of the very weak growth in personal disposable incomes.

Unravelling the mysteries of money supply
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom money supply is growing by more than nominal gross domestic product, and this could signal inflationary pressures. The growth of the money supply is not as rapid if the category of other financial institutions such as pension funds is excluded. These institutions do not invest in physical capital to any great extent, nor do they consumer in retail stores, so they are likely to have little impact on inflation.
