The right to flop
Article Abstract:
There are now only nine flophouses left on The Bowery in the Lower East Side area of New York, NY. The flophouses offer inexpensive dormitory or cabin-style accommodation to people who would otherwise probably be sleeping rough. The atmosphere in the flophouses is rather oppressive, but some people live there for many years, having little contact with the outside world or fellow residents. Flophouses were originally designed for itinerant workers and homeless men, and there were once many in New York.

Mr Big cables up
Article Abstract:
Paul G. Allen regards his purchase of cable television company Marcus Cable for $2.775 billion as a key element in his vision of a wired world. He foresees a hyper-connected world of services such as video on demand and takeaway menus on television screens. He is giving particular attention to the leisure industry, seeking to reach those who will never purchase a PC. He now aims to use Marcus Cable to offer interactive services through a high-speed modem in the cable box.

Loyal supporters
Article Abstract:
The 11-piece Detroit dance band, Was (Not Was), have made five albums on Ze Records since the 1970's but may achieve more success in their world tour supporting Dire Straits. Don and David Was have produced or played with Bob Dylan, Madonna and Elton John. They add metal guitar solos and narrative lyrics to dance music and their most requested song is 'Hello Dad, I'm in Jail.' Their latest album takes the same title but is a remix album. They also produce other artists.
