The sacred sites of Britain
Article Abstract:
The international Sacred Land project aims to protect sanctified sites in more than nine different countries. In the UK, it will have a budget of 750,000 pounds sterling over five years, and will receive support from sources including the Pilkington Foundation and the Duke of Edinburgh. It has already adopted 700 sites, and aims for a total of 5,000. The work will involve both ancient sites and new ones, especially in areas where there is an urgent need for renewal and conservation. For modern sites, the emphasis is on places which are special, rather than sacred.

Secrets of a holiday on ice
Article Abstract:
There has been extensive media coverage of the trek to the North Pole by 20 British women, who covered 1,000 km in five relay teams. This was obviously a considerable achievement, but cannot really be described as a triumph. In fact, Polar Travel Co, which arranged the expedition, regularly organizes similar trips for men. Some media coverage has been rather patronizing, implying that the women involved were simply having a rather adventurous break from family life.

How to halt the global money-go-round?
Article Abstract:
Aid agencies must now address the issue of how to respond to growing economic globalisation. Latest communications and technology allow companies to invest anywhere in the world, and this is speeding up the flow of money around the world. Some of the world's poor benefit as companies seek lower wage costs, but as soon as living standards and local wages start to rise, companies move elsewhere. It may need international coordination to halt this trend.
