'Economic benefits' outweighed Mox plant concerns
Article Abstract:
The UK government has decided that opposition to the production of plutonium mixed oxide nuclear fuel at the Sellafield reprocessing plant in Cumbria does not outweigh the potential to earn up to 150 million pounds sterling over the lifetime of the facility. Opponents point out that the plant cost 473 million pounds sterling to build and that there will be large costs associated with decommissioning its contaminated elements at the end of its lifetime.

The experiment ends, but Dounreay lives on
Article Abstract:
The announcement that the Dounreay nuclear reprocessing plant near Thurso, Scotland, is to close did not come as a surprise. The plant has not operated as a nuclear power station since 1994, and now has only one reprocessing contract. It has attracted considerable controversy, particularly because of the accidental leakage of nuclear material. Some of those who have worked at Dounreay emphasize that its safety record should not be judged by today's standards. Many of its problems date from a time when nuclear power was much less highly regulated.
