It is wise to hold shares in companies of varying sizes, according to fund manager Nigel Thomas, who has been running the portfolio of what is now the ABN AMRO UK Growth fund since it was launched in Dec 1986. He believes that it is not necessary to be in the FTSE all the time, and points out that it is not possible to outperform the index if you track it. He is not attracted to commodity stocks, and also feels that he is not very good at property shares.
