The stakeholder plan - solution or problem?
Article Abstract:
The UK government believes that stakeholder pensions could play a valuable role in improving pension provision, especially for the low-paid, women and those with unpredictable earnings. The stakeholder pensions planned by the government would be multi-member, with some schemes possibly being open to a specific occupation or industry and others focusing on certain parts of the country or particular groups of people, such as the self-employed. It is now seeking consultation with trade unions, employers and retailers about how they could contribute to stakeholder pensions.

Early planning forms the bedrock for comfortable retirement
Article Abstract:
Many younger people are changing their ideas about financial planning for retirement as the population is seen to be ageing and early retirement is more common in the 90's. Occupational pension schemes or a personal Pension Plan are worthwhile for over-40's but Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVCs) provide extra pension and attract tax relief. Personal Equity Plans (PEPs) are tax-free and can provide an income before taking up a pension. The self-employed and the young should consider Personal Pension Plans which enable benefits to be taken at age 50.

The grand-daddy of all pensions
Article Abstract:
Considerable controversy could result from the recent recommendation by the Retirement Income Inquiry that all working people who earn more than a minimum weekly sum should be obliged to contribute to a national pension scheme if they are not already a member of an occupational scheme or paying at least equivalent contributions into a personal pension. Such as scheme would replace Serps, which is mainly funded by taxpayers. There could be considerable opposition to a further compulsory deduction from wages.
