UK: HMV AIMS TO INVEST IN E-COMMERCE
Article Abstract:
HMV, the UK music retailer, is planning to expand its e-commerce interests. The group already sells its video and CD range over the Internet, but is aiming to increase its online presence, believing that it may benefit from the cash difficulties of US-based CD Internet retailers such as CDNow. HMV intends to offer CDs at prices lower than those of high street shops, although they will not be as low as those of certain dot.com retailers, whose chart CDs can cost as little as GB[pound] 8.99. Although it has high debt levels, HMV intends to raise GB[pound] 20mn in order to fund its e-commerce drive. The group also owns the Waterstone's book chain, which it is thought may be sold.

The stamp collector who lost a mint in the flower market
Article Abstract:
Significant problems arose following the purchase of stamp dealership Stanley Gibbons by Flying Flowers, supplier of flowers by post, in Apr 1998 for 13.5 million pounds sterling. Gibbons owner Paul Fraser lost a very considerable sum of money when the value of shares in Flying Flowers slumped as sales proved not to be as strong as had been anticipated. It is now possible that the future success of the business will depend quite heavily on the Gibbons operations.

Stars mine gold from rock of wages
Article Abstract:
Some observers believe that there is considerable potential for the securitization of intellectual property such as popular old pop and rock songs and back catalogues of television programmes. The main criteria for a successful securitization of this kind are a steady income stream from a well-copyrighted piece of intellectual property and a strong track record. The artists benefit from immediate access to cash, but also continue to own the copyright on their work.
