The sweet smell of panic
Article Abstract:
Dramatist and film-maker Stephen Poliakoff became a high profile figure in the theatre in the UK at the age of only 24, when he won an Evening Standard Award for 'Hitting Town' and 'City Sugar.' He became the first Writer in Residence at the National Theatre, and in 1984 began to explore his Russian-Jewish background in 'Breaking the Silence.' He has a number of recurring themes, including the way in which the past has been wrong about the future. Most recently, his new play 'Sweet Panic' is due to open at Hampstead Theatre.

Damned if he does, damned if he don't
Article Abstract:
Many theatre companies are now looking to enter the new-writing boom by encouraging high-profile young dramatists to adapt famous texts, according to dramatist Mark Ravenhill. His first play, 'Shopping and Fucking,' attracted a great deal of controversy, and he is now going in a very different direction with an adaptation of 'Faust.' His version is set in motels and desert space on the West Coast of the US, with Los Angeles teenagers acting as a video-chorus and relaying the dehumanised values of society.
