The tanks came straight for us
Article Abstract:
Roger Cooper was a student at Oxford in 1956 when the Hungarian revolution started, Imre Nagy having taken power from the previous administration, and Cooper and his friends wanted to do something to help. They decided to take some antibiotics to Hungary and he and three others flew out to Brussels with a Volkswagen Beetle full of drugs. They met the Red Cross but refused to give up their supplies, insisting on delivering them themselves. They crossed the border into Hungary just before the border was closed, eventually reached Budapest and gave the drugs to Dr Hajnal, a pioneer in heart disease who was coordinating medical relief.

1492: if Columbus had come here
Article Abstract:
King Henry VII ruled England in 1492, trying to bring peace to the land. The population was three million. Violence and disorder were extremely common. A system of communal surveillance established a moral code. Execution was the punishment for capital crimes. Imprisonment was hardly used. The royal court of about 1,000 people moved from palace to palace every six weeks. Food was plentiful; a large meal was eaten at 11 am and at 4 or 5pm. People were in bed by 8pm. Much ale was drunk, at home and in inns, taverns and alehouses. Water was unsafe to drink.
