The watertight solution
Article Abstract:
The best way to ensure that garden plants survive a prolonged period of dry weather is to prepare the soil thoroughly. It is worth adding compost, manure and leaf mould to thin, fast-draining soil to improve its ability to retain water. It is also advisable to use a loam-based compost, rather than a soilless one, even if loam-based composts are rather heavy. Vegetables, which are particularly vulnerable during dry periods, can be protected by planting nasturtiums and marigolds around them when they are well established.
