The wild romance of science
Article Abstract:
The Tate Gallery in London, England, is staging an exhibition entitled 'Turner and the Scientists.' This highlights the fact that Turner had frequent contact with men of science such as Michael Faraday, moving away from his conventional image as a painter of sky and sea. His paintings are shown as depicting the intensity of feeling common to artists and scientists in the first third of the 19th century. His work is also being exhibited at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, England, under the title 'Italy in the Age of Turner: The Garden of the World.'

Sacrificial images
Article Abstract:
The work of early 17th century Portuguese woman painter Josefa de Obidos is currently being exhibited at the European Academy and the Accademia Italiana in London, England. Her work, which shows very routine subjects, can be seen as part of a growing interest in still life painting across Europe from the end of the 16th century. She was greatly derivative of more talented Spanish painters, but was also very Portuguese and original. She puts homely details into her versions of famous pictures of the holy family.

Taking a quick look at the dead
Article Abstract:
There are currently several exhibitions taking place in London, England, that focus on images of death and the vanity of human life. The Wallace Collection, for example, is exhibiting paintings by Paul Delaroche under the title 'Death and Devotion,' while the Royal Academy is staging an exhibition entitled 'Victorian Fairy Painting.' There are also many images of death in the work of portraitist Tom Phillips, which is being displayed at the Dulwich Picture Gallery.
