The man who invented Jack Nicholson
Article Abstract:
The roles which actor Jack Nicholson plays must not be confused with Nicholson as a real person, according to director Bob Rafelson, with whom Nicholson has collaborated for many years. Nicholson appears in many films where Rafelson is attempting to get to grips with certain ideas and concepts, but these are fairly universal issues. As such, they should not be interpreted as mirroring Rafelson's own life too closely. Most recently, the two men have worked together on 'Blood and Wine.'

Sex and violence? It's only satire
Article Abstract:
Filmmaker Paul Verhoeven admits that he uses cliches seriously, in full awareness that they are cliches. He refuses to separate himself from these cliches, and this leads to his films being misinterpreted. He feels that he should perhaps be more direct, but he finds himself unable to be. His films focus on sex and violence, and in this way he satirizes the US. This is reflected very clearly in 'Starship Troopers,' which shows characters who are supposed to be naive and manipulable.

Water under the bridge
Article Abstract:
Film director Kevin Reynolds was pleased to be involved with the low-budget film '187,' as this gave him more control than he had with 'Waterworld,' a film with a very large budget which proved to be disastrous. He has been able through '187' to revive his passion as a film-maker, and feels that the film reflects who he is. He has been greatly influenced by David Lean, who always portrays human beings and their activities as being futile within the context of history.
