These men have the bottle to challenge beer taxes
Article Abstract:
Members of the Independent Family Brewers of Britain are backing master brewer Stewart Neame in his legal action challenging the government's plan to raise duty on beer and wine by 3% on Jan 01, 1998. Brewers feel that taxation is working against their industry, particularly in encouraging Britons to travel to France to purchase beer more cheaply. Independent brewers are managing to retain market share with their traditional beers, but are seeing a sharp decline in the number of people visiting their pubs.

GERMANY: NEW GM BEER DEVELOPED
Article Abstract:
A genetically modified (GM) beer has been developed at Berlin's Technical University which uses the LPT1 gene as its basis. The gene, which is present in barley, creates a protein that does not dissolve in water but dissolves in fats, allowing a foaming head to be sustained. The German scientists' development emanates from the fact that the surface tension which eradicates bubbles in drink can be obliterated by the grease present in lipstick or crisps.

Beckett blocks brewery merger
Article Abstract:
The planned purchase by Bass of fellow brewing concern Carlsberg-Tetley PLC has been blocked by UK Board of Trade President Margaret Beckett. This decision will give temporary job protection to around 2,500 employees in the brewing industry, but industry experts believe that at least 500 jobs will be cut in any case. City analysts believe that Beckett's decision indicates that the government will be interpreting competition regulations very strictly.
