The tuna fleet which sails out of Newlyn in Cornwall has already had a number of clashes with the Spanish fishing fleet, which contest the right of other fleets to use drift nets in international waters. The tuna fishing season is soon to start again, and it is likely that there will be more conflict with Spanish trawlers. Tuna fishing is an essential part of the income of Cornish fishermen, who face very limited quotas for the fish which they catch at other times of year.

Portugal's 1997 port vintage is set to be of a very high quality. Weather conditions have generally been favourable, and it has been possible to undertaken an uninterrupted harvest. The port industry is very strictly regulated, mainly in order to prevent overproduction. Port is benefiting from wider appeal, and is now more frequently drunk by younger people. The most profitable market sector is vintage port, which is in strong demand in the UK and the US.
