London comes of age
Article Abstract:
The 1998 London Fashion Week gave a clear demonstration of the young fashion design talent that exists in the UK. The UK's young fashion designers have gained the confidence to make personal statements, and many have already become very successful. In many cases, they have been helped to establish themselves by sponsorship from Marks and Spencer under its New Generation scheme. UK fashion emphasizes quality, rather than quantity, with Matthew Williamson, for example, showing only 11 outfits.

The message from Paris: marvel at the frocks, but buy the sunglasses
Article Abstract:
Couture houses are well aware that only a very small number of women can afford to buy their clothes. For this reason, they place strong emphasis on selling much less expensive related items by trading on the glamour of their name. Such items include perfume, sunglasses and stockings. The costs of making a couture collection are much greater than any revenue from sales, but fashion shows provide valuable publicity, especially if celebrities attend.
