Thoughts of Volga Germans turn to home
Article Abstract:
A meeting between Russian and German government officials on Apr 21, 1992 will discuss the possible re-establishment of the Volga Germans' Republic. About 2 million Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) citizens have German origin on their passports and are eligible to emigrate to Germany but the influx from East Germany has already caused problems. In 1991, 147,320 returned to Germany from the CIS and a further 700,00 applications are in process. A new settlement called Stormy has been created which could become a Volga Germans' Republic. Bonn would support this financially. However, only 20,000 Germans live on the old Volga Republic territory and 3m residents of other nationalities do not want the republic.

Pravda's moment of truth
Article Abstract:
Pravda, the Russian newspaper, lost its influence on Aug 19 1991 when its competitor, Izvestia, reported President Yeltsin's reactions to the coup of the preceding day. Pravda itself, as the Communist Party's official voice, published nothing on Mr Yeltsin but he closed it on Aug 24 1991 as an accomplice to the coup. The paper lost its funds as the Communist Party was banned, but was allowed to recommence in Sep 1991. In Mar 1992 it had to close for three weeks due to lack of funds but the government provided a loan and it re-opened in Apr 1992 and appears three times a week with only four pages. It now attacks the rapid economic reforms and is branching out with two monthlies on crime and religion.

Don't be beastly to the Germans
Article Abstract:
There have been strong anti-German sentiments expressed in tabloid newspapers in the UK as the German and English football teams prepare to meet. This reflects the anti-Germanism which has been seen in a number of different forms in the UK for many years. This is making Germans living in the UK feel uncomfortable and goes strongly against the fact that Germany is in fact very like the UK.
