Three economic zones, all with plenty to worry about
Article Abstract:
North America, continental Europe and East Asia, the world's main economic zones, are facing slightly different challenges as business picks up again after the summer 1997 break. In North America, the main concern is whether the economy will slide into recession or remain in a period of sustainable growth. In East Asia, experts are considering whether the currency fluctuations taking place at present are an indication of longer term economic difficulties. In continental Europe, the main economic issue will be progress towards the single European currency.

Market instability has affected the three time zones in different ways
Article Abstract:
Stock market instability has been viewed with concern for very different reasons in the European, East Asian and North American time zones. In East Asia, declining stock markets make it clear that it will take some time to restore confidence in the region. In Europe, the main concern is whether stock market uncertainty will have a negative impact on modest economic recovery. In North America, there are worries about whether declining confidence caused by unstable markets will put an end to economic boom.

Is this the start of something good?
Article Abstract:
There are many conflicting signals about the state of the UK economy. Package holidays are continuing to be popular, for example, but retail sales are still weak and many people fear unemployment. The main difficulties still to be resolved are the significant of capacity in a service economy, the role of the weak housing market and how to ensure that this is a sustained period of economic growth.
