Tiananmen - still hard to forget, ten years on
Article Abstract:
The Chinese authorities have taken great care to remove from Tiananmen Square, Beijing, China, all traces of the massacre that took place there in Jun 1989. There is now almost a carnival atmosphere in the square, where capitalism and tourism have become firmly established. The square houses many ice cream vendors, and the largest Kentucky Fried Chicken outlet in the world is also very close. It is hard to establish whether the protests in 1989 were a victory or a failure.

A saint in calvados country
Article Abstract:
A basilica dedicated to Sainte Therese in Lisieux, France, has become the most visited shrine in France after Lourdes. The town holds a Festival of Sainte Therese on the last Sunday in Sep each year, and in 1997 is holding special events to mark the centenary of her death. A cult has grown up around her, and this is particularly noticeable in the town's 13th century cathedral. Thousands of people travel from abroad to hear mass at the basilica.

Milton Keynes: wilder than you thought
Article Abstract:
The city of Milton Keynes, England, was developed in the 1960s, and is therefore not generally associated with nature and wildlife. However, 400 acres of woodland have been planted there, and green space accounts for a fifth of the total area covered by the city. The diversity of wildlife has increased since the 1960s, and moves are now being made to identify and protect corridors for wildlife throughout the city.
