The gospel according to Anthony
Article Abstract:
Literature and African-American church music are not necessarily opposing interests, according to Anthony Heilbut, author and gospel music expert. He wrote the first really comprehensive history of gospel music, and is working on a 25th anniversary edition. He has also attracted attention as the biographer of Thomas Mann, whom he credits as having great sensitivity, contrasting with the traditional image of Mann as being cold and dry.

Brian Wilson - genius of pop. It's a bit of a cliche. But what does it mean?
Article Abstract:
A new television programme about Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys has revived discussion about his abilities and his influence. He was hailed as a 'genius' from an early stage, and certainly had great melodic gifts. However, he had difficulties in relating to other people, and by the mid-1970s had become a mere shadow of his former self. He used drugs to escape reality, and failed to complete musical projects.

Twenty-five years from Tulsa
Article Abstract:
There have been a considerable number of musical influences on the work of rock singer Jean-Jacques Cale, who was extremely popular in the 1970s. He has been strongly associated with a very relaxed sound, and has made considerable efforts in more recent years to shed this image. His latest album, 'Death in the Wilderness,' presents a very different style from that for which he is best known.
