Time to speak up for summer schools
Article Abstract:
Summer schools are a key element of the work of the Open University, and it is vital that they are not abandoned. It is clear that most Open University students enjoy attending summer schools and derive considerable benefits from them. It seems that the Open University's commitment to summer schools could be waning for financial reasons, rather than educational ones. Summer schools bring together tutors and students from across the UK, and there is a very positive atmosphere, with students being prepared to work very hard and to challenge the tutors.

Today's student is a tourist, not a traveller
Article Abstract:
The expansion of student numbers at UK universities has led to an increase in the number of students who have poor standards of literacy and numeracy and are not really fully committed to higher education. It has become more common for students to focus on gaining marks and certificates, with many placing little emphasis on the overall learning experience. In many cases, students regard higher education solely as a way of improving their career opportunities.
