Article Abstract:
There is a need for a change in United Kingdom economic policy. The separation of fiscal and monetary policy has led to higher interest rates and a stronger pound sterling which has hit exports and manufacturing. The UK would use different policies as a member of European monetary union, with more attention placed on fiscal policy and less on monetary policy. Increases in personal taxation would allow interest rates to be lower, and the UK would be able to control consumption and boost exports.

Why the MPC is just an economic sideshow
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government can make little difference to the economy by using macoeconomic policies, but there are actions that it can take. Microeconomic policies which are linked to supply-side measures, can help realise the potential of technological change. Such policies include improving the urban environment and tackling social deprivation and polarization. Crime prevention, increased welfare spending, and other costs result from such polarization.
