To save East Timor, we must make life hard for the generals
Article Abstract:
It is important to recognize that military intervention in East Timor by an international force will not be effective. Instead, the international community should consider imposing sanctions against Indonesia, beginning with the supply of military equipment. Sanctions may have a negative impact on ordinary Indonesians, but they are morally justified against the background of Indonesia's actions in East Timor. Any peacekeeping force sent to East Timor must be led by Asian countries but have a strong Western element.

My admiration for these brave martyrs in Burma
Article Abstract:
There is a strong atmosphere of fear in Burma, which can be seen as the ultimate police state. It is against this background that the actions of Britons James Mawdsley and Rachel Goldwyn, who have been imprisoned for campaigning for democracy, must be assessed. Their actions cannot be dismissed as futile gestures. Indeed, Mawdsley and Goldwyn show a firm belief in principles which has almost vanished in modern society. Their actions should prompt the UK government to adopt a tougher stance towards Burma.

Asian values have nothing to do with generals in the grip of madness
Article Abstract:
Burma seems to have become overwhelmed by madness. The country's ruling military elite appears to ignore logic and be able to resist any pressure. It is clear that the Burmese will eventually rebel against these dictators, but the Junta fails to recognize that negotiation before a rebellion breaks out would be a wise approach. The UK, as the former colonial power, should be playing a leading role in ensuring that this situation is not allowed to persist.
