Moves by headmasters of public schools to gain new business have included undertaking marketing work in the Far East, and this has been one of the driving forces behind the rise in the number of Asian pupils attending public schools in the UK. There are also more pupils from Asian families living in the UK. Parents, many of who were first-generation settlers in the UK in the 1960s, are now determined that their children should have the educational opportunities to which they themselves did not have access.

The UK government's New-Start scheme is designed to encourage young people who are disruptive, excluded from school or truanting to begin learning again. Schools are permitted to exempt students aged between 14 and 16 from the national curriculum if they feel that they would be motivated by more practical training. Initiatives operating as part of the New-Start scheme include the Cool project in Daventry, England, which has involved young people in work including tyre-fitting and exhaust-fitting.

Working with emotionally and behaviourally disturbed children can be an extremely rewarding experience, according to Dave Hough, one of 12 education social workers in the London borough of Tower Hamlets. It is particularly rewarding to visit families, work closely with them and see a great improvement in the education of the child concerned. Some cases can be very complicated, and it often takes a long time to see any improvement.
