What drives the P rush?
Article Abstract:
Around 500,000 people in the UK will acquire a new car in August 1996, anxious to be among the first to purchase a P-registration vehicle. Such people tend to be reasonably wealthy and young and like the novelty aspect, but having so many people purchasing cars in one month is not practical, and ways of making suitable changes are being discussed. The registration letter might be changed more often, or people could, like Rolls Royce purchasers, who are not affected by the new P-registration, have a personalised number plate which they could continue using when they change cars.

When politics takes its orders from commerce
Article Abstract:
Many observers agree that the power of national governments is declining. Power is now shifting to multinational companies, organizations such as the European Union and the financial markets. The power of wealthy individuals is also increasing. This means that politicians are having to increasingly act like entrepreneurs, taking ideas and selling them to others who can help to put them into practice. In the UK, this is being reflected in the fact that many people from the business community are now involved in government projects.
