Tories' workfare may turn out to be a work farce
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party plans to establish a community work scheme for the long-term unemployed if it wins the next general election. This is in line with a growing view in the UK and other countries that the long-term unemployed should be obliged to undertake some kind of work in return for their benefits. This would also have the advantage of giving these people skills which will make them more attractive to potential employers. However, some observers feel that such a scheme would be no more than meaningless work-creation, and would take up excessive amounts of public money.

Tietmeyer underlines German commitment to a strong euro
Article Abstract:
Germany is strong committed to a strong, stable currency, according to Hans Tietmeyer, president of the Bundesbank. He feels that it is not justified to claim that the euro will be a weak currency simply because European currencies have declined against the dollar recently. European Union member states should ensure that they take a responsible approach to fiscal policy, as the strength and credibility of the euro will be under threat if they do not.
