It is we who are to blame for the UN failure in East Timor
Article Abstract:
The violent conflict in East Timor should be regarded as a matter of shame for the entire international community. In particular, some responsibility must rest with the governments of the leading countries making the final decisions about how the United Nations should act. The international community should have been aware of the likely repercussions of holding a referendum in East Timor, and now has a very strong moral obligation to intervene. The United Nations has also been guilty of misleadingly raising expectations about the extent of its ability to intervene militarily in East Timor.

If it's American snow, it's gotta be big
Article Abstract:
The US experiences extreme weather conditions fairly frequently. This is particularly the case in Washington and the Mid-Atlantic region, which is situated where warm air moving north from the Gulf of Mexico and cold air from Canada meet. Most recently, Washington experienced almost two feet of snow, and the 31 inches which fell in only two days in Philadelphia was the largest 24-hour snowfall ever recorded. Washington seems ill-prepared for snow, and public transport systems and schools have had to shut down.
