Tory talk of family values covers another betrayal
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party's approach to promoting family values does not distinguish it in any significant way from the Labour party or the Liberal Democrats. Like most other politicians, prime minister John Major is being careful to say nothing of any real substance, thus ensuring that he cannot be blamed if a policy goes wrong. Looking beyond the rhetoric, it seems that the government is not prepared to give any concrete assistance to the families which are in most need.

Even the Tories are saying it now
Article Abstract:
Leadership style varies from the heroic to ordinary competence. Baldwin, who was Prime Minister for 14 years, remained in power after journalistic challenge by using passion. Attlee, Labour leader for 20 years, might have been overthrown dishonourably when coal ran short in 1947 if there had been a rival willing to oust him. Effective leadership requires dedication to a strategy which has some expectation of success.
