It is becoming increasingly widely recognized at national level in the UK that emergency aid is not the best way of ensuring long-term economic security for developing countries. It is vital to deal with the underlying structural problems of the international trading system and to ensure that local people are fully integrated into development schemes. Trading in a fair way with developing countries, as shown in the work of organizations such as Traidcraft, has now become increasingly widespread in the UK.

Newspapers which have traditionally taken a Conservative stance have for some time been critical of the UK government. However, the recent strong attack by the Daily Telegraph on leading Conservative politicians caused particular shock in the Conservative party. Other newspaper groups, such as Associated Press and News International, are also showing clear signs of shifting to Labour party views.
