Treating arthritis naturally: supplements of glucosamine and chondroitin can help with osteoarthritis while omega-3 is recommended for rheumatoid arthritis
Article Abstract:
Pharmacists can provide help to people with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis by educating them on the effect of supplements, proper hydration and avoidance of food allergens. Modern research has shown that osteoarthritis may be induced by nutritional deficiencies to the cells in joint tissue that produce cartilage. Thus, supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate can help alleviate osteoarthritis. On the other hand, rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic, autoimmune disease and, therefore, avoidance of food allergens is essential.

Turning up the volume on hypertension
Article Abstract:
Pharmacists can help hypertensive patients comply with the medications and lifestyle changes needed to cure the disease. Patient compliance is often difficult to achieve because hypertension has few outward symptoms. According to an American Heart Assn (AHA) study, about 35% of Americans who are hypertensive are unaware that they have the disease. A multi-level approach is being recommended by the AHA to address compliance problems. One of the approaches is through education, a role that pharmacists can fulfill.

ARBs grow in popularity
Article Abstract:
Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) are gaining the favor of more health experts in the treatment of high blood pressure. ARBs cause less of the side effects associated with other hypertensive drugs, such as a continuous dry cough caused by angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE). The more positive side effects of ARBs include increased compliance from hypertensive patients. A study in The Lancet indicated that patients using ARBs had lesser mortality rates than those who took ACE inhibitors.
