Some critics of modern art have claimed that it has abandoned traditional skills, particularly in depicting the human form. However, most modern art is in fact figurative, showing the human presence and human relationships in many different ways. This is shown in the works of painter John Currin, who is mainly concerned with the female form, and sculptor Stephan Balkenhol, whose works are naturalistically proportioned.

The 'From Here' exhibitions of abstract painting currently being held at Waddington's in Cork Street, London W1, and Karsten Schubert, Foley Street, London W1, combine works from different generations. They include paintings by Bridget Riley, Michael Craig-Martin, Alan Charlton, Zebedee Jones and Patrick Heron. They are designed to present a broad overview of trends in abstract painting.

British art with attitude
Article Abstract:
The fourth British Art Show covers 25 artists and more than 90 artworks in seven locations, and brings together a wide range of recent artistic developments. It has a strong serious element, with a rather dark atmosphere running through many of the performances and exhibits. Artists involved include Damien Hirst, Steve McQueen and Sam Taylor Wood.
