Turmoil reigns in Asia once more
Article Abstract:
Leading investors are still very wary about likely developments in China and Japan. Their scepticism has led to Hong Kong's blue-chip Hang Seng Index falling by 4.9% to its lowest point for more than three years. The value of the Japanese yen has begun to decline again, and this has had the effect of pushing down stocks and currencies elsewhere in Asia. Some observers fear that the situation in East Asia will worsen because Japan and China can do little to help and because the Asian economies are heavily burdened with seriously devalued assets.

Soldiers watch aloof as children walk the streets weak with hunger
Article Abstract:
Children are visibly suffering from hunger in North Korea, but the authorities are seeking to hide the problem. Food stores hold only soy sauce and water. Aid agencies are feeding a quarter of N Korea's inhabitamts and some 80% of industry is idle. People go to work places where there is no work for them to do. Visitors are shown the better fed children of elite members, while orphanages house children who are malnourished. Some food is bing sold from private smallholdings but this is unlikely to solve the problem.

Bullish mood precursor of 'interesting times.' (Hong Kong stock market set for strong rise)
Article Abstract:
The Hong Kong stock market is already 38% higher than at its lowest point in 1995, and is set to make further significant gains before the end of the year. According to some observers, the Hang Seng Index could even reach 12,000 points. However, there are also indications of difficulties. Hong Kong companies still have very low earnings growth, and the volume of shares traded continues to fall.
