UK: 25,000 PEOPLE A YEAR BUILD OWN HOME
Article Abstract:
Some 25,000 people a year in Britain are now building their own homes. Building societies figures show that the industry is now worth around GB[pound] 1bn a year. The numbers reflect an increasing willingness by the public to take responsibility for dealing with planners, builders and subcontractors for a year on average. The rush has been triggered by spiralling property prices and the attraction of a specially designed dwelling. Those who oversee projects can expect to make an average saving of 20-40% on the cost of a home built by a property developer. More than 10% of mortgages with the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society are to self-builders.

UK: TV SHOWS HELP GARDEN TRADE GROW APACE
Article Abstract:
Television gardening programmes have done a great deal to encourage the 40% growth of the garden trade industry over the past decade, as well as the growing trend for people to use gardening as a means of alleviating stress. According to a forthcoming report by Ben Gill, president of the National Farmer's Union, factors such as BSE and a strong pound mean that the agricultural industry is facing a crisis, the worst since the 1930s, so the growth of the gardening market is a welcome light on the horizon.
