UK: NEW GOVERNMENT POST FOR BUSINESS ETHICS
Article Abstract:
A new post covering corporate social responsibility will be revealed on 4 May 2000 by the UK government. Kim Howells will reveal details of the ministerial position, which embraces a broad array of issues, including the role of businesses in society, and their social, economic and environmental impact. The role of businesses in the community has increased in importance on the political agenda recently, with the UK government becoming embroiled in the controversial decision by Barclays to shut 170 outlets in rural areas. Both the Confederation of British Industry and Federation of Small Businesses welcomed the move, with the latter regarding it as an indication that the government was keen to act over the exploitation of market position by large firms.

UK: IMF STUDY CRITICISES BANK OF ENGLAND SET-UP
Article Abstract:
A report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), published as a working paper, warns that the Bank of England's power to set interest rates may encourage too many inflation rate moves and that the framework needs to be improved. The two IMF economists, who wrote the report, warned that inflation forecasts lacked credibility since decision-making had moved away from political influence. On a more positive note, the authors concluded that in conjunction with the Government's strong fiscal rules, the new arrangement would 'promote overall macroeconomic stability'.

UK: GROWING PROBLEM OF HOAX WARNINGS VIA NET
Article Abstract:
The Internet is increasingly being used in the UK to transmit hoax stories or urban myths, which are posing a threat to public and business confidence. E-mails are being sent warning people about child abductors, rapists, bomb threats and stalkers and these scare stories are being forwarded, allowing them to spread at a rapid rate. E-mails offering free products made by Nokia, Microsoft or Ericsson have been found to be false, along with the claim that the popular Red Bull energy drink contained a harmful stimulant.
