UK: ANTICIPATED JOB LOSSES IN TEXTILE INDUSTRY
Article Abstract:
It is estimated that the UK textile industry will see job losses of around 25,000 during 2000, in addition to over 40,000 during 1999. The GMB union has lobbied the government over the threatened loss of 6,000 jobs as a result of supplier changes by Marks & Spencer, which has rejected a GB[pound] 35mn compensation package for UK suppliers including Coats Viyella and William Baird. The GMB union claims that the UK's garment making industries have been neglected because around 75-90% of workers are women. It contrasts the treatment of the industry with that of car workers, who are being offered multi-million pound aid packages.
