UK: GOVERNMENT CONTEMPLATING PENSION INCREASE
Article Abstract:
The UK government intends to reveal on 28 April 2000 that it plans to raise pensions by GB[pound] 104 per year at least for single people and by GB[pound] 156 for married couples in 2001. A weekly increase of GB[pound] 2 in the basic pensions appears to be assured even if the inflation rate falls below expectations and the move is regarded as an attempt by the Labour Party to win the vote of pensioners ahead of the next General Election. Prime Minister, Tony Blair, is eager to demonstrate to pensioners that GB[pound] 6.5bn will be devoted to them, while the government is investing almost GB[pound] 10mn in a promotional effort to urge old people to claim their permitted benefits.
