UK: PRISM RAIL TAKEOVER TALKS END
Article Abstract:
Prism Rail revealed on 27 April 2000 that discussions regarding a potential takeover of the UK-based train operator had ended without agreement being reached. Arriva had been regarded as the leading candidate to purchase the group, which operates Cardiff Railway, West Anglia Great Northern, Wales & West and LTS London-Southend franchises. Prism, which is currently valued at GB[pound] 130mn, may now look to enhance its financial resources via an alliance or joint venture.

UK: BRANSON NOT TO ACQUIRE EAST COAST RAIL
Article Abstract:
Sir Richard Branson has had his bid for the operation of train services on the London-Edinburgh route refused as the Strategic Rail Authority has decided that current operator GNER (Great North Eastern Railways) should retain the franchise. This is Branson's second setback recently as his proposal to run the National Lottery was also refused. Meanwhile, the Association of Train Operating Companies has revealed that loyal passengers holding weekly train tickets will receive no special compensation.

Double boost for Channel Tunnel
Article Abstract:
Eurostar (UK), the UK division of the high-speed rail operation to Paris, France, and Brussels, Belgium, has seen a 29% rise in passenger revenues. This follows considerable efforts to attract business travellers and moves to reduce costs. In a related development, airports operator BAA is taking over Eurotunnel's retail operations at its terminals in Folkestone, England, and Calais, France. BAA plans to produce sales of at least 100 million pounds sterling by 2000, even if duty-free sales are abandoned in Europe in Jul 1999. Eurostar (UK) is on schedule to break even by 2005.
Comment:
Has reported that BAA will assume responsibility for its terminal retail operations
