UK: BRITISH ENERGY PENSION PLANS AND WAGE FREEZE
Article Abstract:
The UK nuclear electricity generator, British Energy, announced 6 April 2000 that it is looking to cut costs by implementing a freeze on wages and decreasing pension benefits. The company said that the measures, which could also result in the loss of 500 jobs, will result in savings of around GB[pound] 50mn. It is thought that a freeze on wages would see the generator save GB[pound] 13mn on an annual basis.

JAPAN: FLAWED NUCLEAR SHIPMENT RETURNED TO UK
Article Abstract:
The Japanese government is nearing a deal with the UK government on the return of a shipment of flawed nuclear fuel from BNFL which will cost the British taxpayer millions of pounds. The concession represents a U-turn on the part of the British government which in April was still refusing to take the fuel back. Although the return is to enable BNFL to resume Mox business with Kansai Electric, its Japanese customer, all the adverse publicity generated by the scandal may mean that BNFL never again gains Japanese business.
