UK: BRITISH MIDLAND PROMISE OVER ROUTES
Article Abstract:
British Midland has promised the UK government that it will not abolish domestic routes should it obtain clearance to operate transatlantic flights, chairman, Sir Michael Bishop, revealed on 24 May 2000. British Midland has licences to operate to Miami, Boston, Washington and New York from Heathrow, but under the current arrangement only Virgin Airways and British Airways can operate from the UK airport to the US. The UK-based airline has been called on to make the undertaking by Lord MacDonald of Tradeston, the Transport Minister, prior to March 2000 discussions to open up flights between the UK and US. Sir Michael is confident that a phased open skies agreement will be reached in the next set of discussions planned for 12 June 2000.

UK: HIGH COURT RULES AGAINST AIRLINES
Article Abstract:
Airlines will be prohibited from describing passenger service charges as tax after a ruling by the High Court in the UK. The charge was introduced in April of 1999 by airlines as a separate charge to tickets and gave the impression that the extra charge came from airports or the government but not the airlines themselves. The effect of the separate charge resulted in a reduction in the commission received by travel agents. As a result it is thought that travel agents could sue for lost commission in the region of GB[pound] 60mn, following the ruling against British Airways, Lufthansa and Virgin Atlantic.
