UK: VIRGIN & GNER COMPETE FOR RAIL ROUTE
Article Abstract:
Virgin and Great North Eastern Railway (GNER) are to compete for the opportunity to run the mail rail service between London and Edinburgh. If GNER is successful in its bid to retain operation of the rail route it intends to create some 1,000 new jobs. GNER is also planning to operate 140 mile per hour (mph) trains on the route by the year 2010, compared to the standard 125mph trains currently used. This is expected to reduce the time between Edinburgh from three hours 59 minutes to three hours 40 minutes.

UK: PRISM IN RAIL FRANCHISE TALKS
Article Abstract:
The Shadow Strategic Rail Authority (SSRA) is in discussions with the UK train operator Prism Rail regarding the future of the latter's portfolio of franchises. Prism is hoping to finalise the renegotiation of contracts for its portfolio, which includes West Anglia Great Northern, because of the uncertainty, which resulted in the breakdown of takeover talks involving Prism. It is thought that Prism favours the early termination of its Welsh contracts in favour of establishing a single Welsh rail franchise.

UK: SNCF EYES EAST COAS RAIL SERVICE
Article Abstract:
SNCF will bid for the lucrative East Coast train franchise, which is currently held by Great North Eastern Railways (GNER). The state-owned French rail group will compete against GNER, GB Rail and Virgin Trains for the mainline service, which generates revenues of about GB[pound] 300mn per year. GNER's seven-year franchise will run out in 2003 and is among the most profitable UK routes being offered at present by the Shadow Strategic Rail Authority. The candidates may be told before 25 December 1999 if they will be progressing to the official bidding process, with the winning bidder to be unveiled in summer 2000. Virgin plans to invest GB[pound] 3.2bn in its plan, purchasing as many as 37 Pendolino tilting trains valued at GB[pound] 600mn in total.
