UK: CBI REPORTS FALL IN EXPORT ORDERS
Article Abstract:
The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has reported that export orders in manufacturing are at their lowest level since June 1999. Some 48% of companies surveyed are reporting lower export orders than normal, with only 9% claiming that their orders are above normal. Over the next four months 28% of companies are expecting their output to drop further, compared to 21% who foresee an increase. The director general of the CBI, Mr Digby Jones, has warned that the easing of exchange rates will need to be sustained before manufacturers are likely to see any improvement in their export orders.

UK: DECLINE IN MANUFACTURING PRODUCTION
Article Abstract:
Figures from the UK Office of National Statistics have shown that manufacturing output for April 2000 fell by 0.2%. The decline leaves the rate of growth at 1.6%. Much of the blame for the fall was attributed to a 9.5% fall in motor manufacturers production, associated mainly with the recent upheavals at Rover and the end of production in the UK of Ford Escorts. The fall marks the fourth month out of the last five that production has slipped although falls in vehicle output were partly compensated by rises in gas and oil production.
