UK: REPORT CRITICISES NUTRITION THERAPISTS
Article Abstract:
Nutrition therapists in the UK have been criticised for offering misleading advice to patients in a report by Health Which? released on 11 April 2000. The study examined 14 therapists and their advice to people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-related symptoms. Nearly all the therapists sold or suggested pills and potions, which were ineffective, while five of those investigated did not urge patients to visit their GP to ensure they did not have bowel cancer or other more serious problems. There is not obligation among therapists to register with the British Association of Nutritional Therapists and anyone can class themselves as a nutritional therapist.

UK: NEW STUDY OF FOOD ALLERGIES
Article Abstract:
Although 20%-30% of people in the UK claim to suffer an adverse reaction to one type of food at least, a new report claims that under 2% actually experience an allergic reaction. Food sensitivity now impacts 1.4%-1.8% of the population, but the Government Food Standards Agency says that this figure may be underestimated. The majority of adverse reactions related to natural foods as opposed to synthetic colourings, which normally generate more concern among people. Children were four times more likely to suffer food sensitivity, with wheezing or skin rashes making up the bulk of allergic reactions.

UK: COUNCILS ATTACKED FOR FOOD SAFETY FAILURES
Article Abstract:
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has attacked a list of local councils for failing to conduct adequate health and safety inspections at restaurants and food shops. Some 18 councils including Norfolk County Council, Wokingham and the London Borough of Bexley are said to be providing unacceptably low levels of food standards and hygiene inspections. The FSA is to enforce a new set of national standards for inspections which are to be enforced by law.
