UK: BANKS DRAG THEIR FEET OVER WEB BILL PAYING
Article Abstract:
A new scheme developed by Apacs, the bank clearing organisation, called the Electronic Bill Presentation and Payment Service (EBPP) designed to encourage bill paying on the internet, is in danger of collapsing because of the intransigence of the high street banks. The new initiative will allow customers to view and pay bills on the Internet in preference to paying through the post, and will go live early in 2001. However 15 major banking groups have refused to participate in the scheme, arguing that they are developing similar systems of their own. Given the strength of these institutions, it is feared that their lack of support will make it difficult for the scheme to gain widespread recognition.
